Robot scanning becomes a stronger candidate when the same shell family, features and measurement plan return often enough to reuse a programmed presentation and scan route. Handheld or semi-automated measurement can remain the better working method while sample geometry, inspection questions or surface preparation change frequently. The decision is not made by the presence of blue projected light; it is made by whether a repeatable measurement task can be defined, validated and used across real parts.

Define the inspection question before the motion

List the features that drive acceptance: a surface profile, an edge, a hole location or another specified characteristic. For each, record the datum, tolerance, required coverage and how a result will be compared with an approved reference. A broad surface scan can collect a lot of geometry while missing the feature that actually controls a buyer’s decision if the setup and analysis plan were never specified.

Published optical-metrology guidance describes series inspection as a need for repeatable, comparable procedures and relates automated scanning to a programmed measurement plan. One automated-system description treats the part, sensor, robot paths and plan as one arrangement. The planning principle must be adapted to the actual shell and inspection requirement.

The filmed demonstration shows a white robot moving a black scanning head around a flat shell held in a fixture, with projected light visible on the surface. The setup makes the buyer’s next question concrete: which features will be measured, and how will the result be checked against a representative part and an agreed reference?

Where repetition changes the economics of preparation

For a stable shell family, the work of defining views, fixture location, scan paths and analysis can be reused. Compare that recurring benefit with the initial work of building and validating the measurement plan. If a product changes every week and the critical feature moves with each revision, a manual or semi-automated approach may make it easier to investigate the new question before freezing a route. If operators keep measuring the same features on the same family, repeated hand positioning and interpretation may be the work worth standardizing.

Record preparation time, repeat measurement time, rework after a product revision and the number of parts actually requiring the same inspection. Separate the cost of a scan from the cost of getting an accepted measurement decision. The preferred route can change if a family becomes stable or if its acceptance plan is redesigned.

Verify the difficult surface and the reloaded part

Optical scanning responds to the actual surface. Scanning-service guidance identifies colour, reflectivity and transparency as factors in data capture. Test the production surface, not only a clean demonstration sample. Mark which critical features were captured, which needed another view or surface treatment, and whether the treatment is allowed for the product.

Then remove and reload the same shell and repeat the measurement. A result that changes with clamping or datum choice points to a setup problem before it proves anything about robot or handheld precision. Compare the repeated data with the agreed reference and acceptance method. The robot may make a path repeatable; only the measurement validation can show that the result is fit for the actual inspection task.

Send EVST representative shells, the critical features and tolerances, surface condition, present holding method and how often the inspection plan changes. We can discuss a trial that compares manual or semi-automated work with a programmed robot route on the same acceptance question. The first decision is which task deserves a repeatable station, not whether every inspection step should be automated.
